UNESCOVENICE News 14/05/2010 : In an interview for Macedonian Vecer daily, Engelbert Ruoss, Director of the UNESCO Venice Office, talks about UNESCO’s activities related to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Among the projects supported by UNESCO are : the recent conference on interreligious and interethnic dialogue, the National youth conference and multimedia event, the management plan for Ohrid, the restoration of the churches in Ohrid and the regional centre for digitalisation of cultural heritage.

Ruoss further talked about the activities under the joint UN programme “Enhancing Interethnic Community Dialogue and Collaboration” implemented together with UNICEF, UNDP and the Macedonian Government, and on future plans for establishing more UNESCO clubs throughout the country. He expressed UNESCO’s interest to support the Ministries of Environment and Culture to develop programmes for eco tourism and cultural tourism.

Ruoss believes that this country’s cultural heritage should be promoted on a worldwide level, adding also: “I was very interested in the facts how many cultures have been established here during the years, and how all these cultures and religions are different. Being in the same country, sharing the same land, having the same resources, yet keeping the roots throughout the centuries is all part of this culture. In my opinion, the cultural inheritance of this country should gain more promotion around the world.
