MEdIES Mediterranean Education Initiative for Environment & Sustainability was launched by the Hellenic Government during the WSSD in Johannesburg (2002) as a Type II Initiative which aims to facilitate the educational community to contribute in a systematic and concrete way to the implementation of Agenda 21 and the Millennium Development Goals, through the successful application of innovative Educational Programmes in countries around the Mediterranean basin.
MEdIES Core group is the Hellenic Government and MIO-ECSDE together with United Nations Environment Programme/Mediterranean Action Plan UNEP/MAP and UNESCO, while ΜΕdIES water issues are supported and implemented in close cooperation with GWP-Med. MEdIES facilitates Mediterranean educators and students by proposing several educational programmes on cross-cutting themes to the school curricula (such as freshwater, wastes and the sea) in various languages. The Educational Package "Water in the Mediterranean" is the first one in a series of EE publications. The MEdIES interactive webpage provides the platform for the exchange of experiences and “know how” in Educational matters among all involved partners
