Memorandums of Understanding for the implementation of the MDG-F Programme Culture and Development signed with 10 municipalities

MDG-F Project Office in Sarajevo (20/10/2009) : The UN Resident Coordinator Christine McNab, Minister of Civil Affairs of BH Sredoje Nović, Assistant to Federal Minister of Culture and Sport Zdenko Čabrilo, Assistant to the RS Minister for Culture Irena Soldat-Vujanović, representatives of the UNDP, UNICEF and UNESCO signed Memorandums of Understanding with 10 municipalities for the implementation of the project called “Improving Cultural Understanding in BH“.

 

Signing of the MoUs was preceded by public call to municipalities to submit applications for projects related to integrative approach to the cultural understanding at the local community level. Total of 46 applications covering 52 municipalities was received. Based on jointly defined criteria, evaluation commission consisted of representatives of designate Ministries and UN agencies reached a decision that the best applications were submitted by following municipalities: Bihać, Bijeljina, Gradiška, Jajce, Novo Sarajevo, Prijedor, Rudo, Sokolac, Srebrenik i Tešanj. The overall proposed value of the support provided by three UN agencies within the four components of programme “Improving Cultural Understanding in BH“ is approximately 1 million KM. The final selection of the projects that will be implemented by 10 partner municipalities is to be conducted in the forthcoming period.

“Culture’s role in development of a tolerant society is crucial. The society needs to cherish and preserve its cultural diversity, using it as a foundation for future development. Cross-cultural understanding, tolerance and acceptance are the key to the development of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and also for the MDGs. Within this program, a joint vision of culture and development was developed by administrations and civil society in each of ten winning municipalities where more than 600,000 inhabitants live. Activities at the local level will serve as a catalyst for cross-cultural understanding and education. The dedication of ten selected municipalities’ administrations and civil society shows us that we are on the right path”, said Christine McNab, UN Resident Coordinator. Four components of the programme are: improvement of cross-cultural understanding, strengthening of the cultural industries, improvement of the cultural heritage and improvement of cross-cultural education within the period September 2009 – September 2011.

Culture for Development is a partnership programme implemented by three United Nations agencies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, namely the UNDP, UNICEF and UNESCO, in close collaboration with the national Ministry of Civil Affairs, the entity Ministries of Culture and Education, as well as other institutions responsible for education and culture in the country. The programme is funded by the Spanish MDG Achievement Fund thematic window for Culture and Development with envisaged co-financing by the Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
