Official World Heritage Inscription Ceremony of Berat and Gjirokastër in Albania. 21 October 2008
In the presence of the Prime Minister of Albania, Sali Berisha and upon the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Albania, Lulzim Basha, and the Mayor of Berat, Fadil Nasufi, the Assistant-Director-General for Culture of UNESCO, Francoise Riviere and a delegation headed by the Director of the UNESCO Office in Venice (BRESCE), Engelbert Ruoss, will attend the official World Heritage Inscription Ceremony of Berat and Gjirokastër in Albania to take place on 21 October 2008 in Berat.
The joint inscription of both these historical Albanian cities on the prestigious World Heritage list is a remarkable example of the osmosis of human civilization and cultural diversity. Both cities are distinct yet similar-two faces of the same coin and the double inscription underlines Albanian cultural identity.
Promoting the cultural heritage of Berat and Gjirokastër is one the priorities of the UN joint project 'Heritage for Social and Economic Development', to be implemented by UNESCO and UNDP in the framework of the MDG-F Programme on Culture and Development in Albania funded by the Spanish Government. The programme signed on past July with the participation of BRESCE aims to preserve, protect and promote Albania’s cultural heritage and support Albania’s participation in the Alliance of Civilizations. The joint project focuses on the promotion of cultural tourism and aims at creating added values for the heritage sites of Albania.
