Ouch ouch ouch glaciers are melting. A fantastic play to educate youth for sustainable development
In December 2002, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 57/254 to put in place a United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), spanning the years 2005 to 2014. UNESCO was designated as the lead agency for the Decade. The overall goal of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development is the integration of the principles, values, and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning.
Promoting new educational activities is not simply spreading among the youth new insights on important phenomena such as the greenhouse effect and climate change, desertification and erosion of biodiversity, but also and above all achieving awareness and new behaviours and, thus developing a sense of responsibility and solidarity towards our planet Earth among all those who share its resources.
The play originally entitled “Ahi ahi ahi si sciolgono i ghiacciai” is an initiative addressed to a young Italian public aged 4-10 and produced by Gruppo Alcuni in cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (MiBAC) and UNESCO Venice Office. While having fun, kids get involved in the fate of a snowman who is melting at north pole, Eskimos who desperately try to save him without succeeding and an old man Glacier who explains what is going on. Kids are urged to consider the importance of their attitude and to seek solutions to the problems the planet is facing.
UNESCO sustains the play for kids "Ouch ouch ouch glaciers are melting" for the same reasons it has been collaborating on the H2Ooooh! Initiative for the past two years; it is undoubtedly an educational activity that through youth education re-orients society towards sustainable practices in line with the ESD recommendations. UNESCO looks forward to the responsiveness of parents and educators to this educational initiative and sincerely hopes that they will fully catch the potential of the play and feel involved in preserving for the future.
