In the framework of the project “Cultural Heritage - a Bridge towards a Shared Future”, the Regional Seminar on Underwater Heritage will take place in Zadar (Croatia) on 1-4 October 2009. The event is organised by the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology (ICUA) in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, and with the support of UNESCO.

The main objective of the meeting is to present and share good practices on the protection, management, and promotion of underwater cultural heritage, with special attention to the implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage (2001). The seminar will also serve to present the activities of ICUA – recently recognised as UNESCO Centre cat. II – in its functions of an independent institution responsible for the protection of underwater heritage with special focus on the Adriatic and Mediterranean basin.

The seminar is organised around 3 topics: 1) The ratification and implementation of the UNESCO’s Convention on the Protection of Underwater Archaeological Heritage in the countries of the East Mediterranean and South East Europe; 2) The best examples of projects on the protection of underwater cultural goods and examples of international co-operation; and 3) Future activities of the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology – UNESCO Category II Centre in Zadar; Long-term programme proposals and priorities.

Participants in the meeting will be experts and representatives from a large number of Mediterranean, European, and South-East European countries (Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Moldova, Hungary, Austria, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Israel), with the aim at presenting and exchanging knowledge and experiences, as well as proposals for the future work of ICUA.
