Montenegro to host Durmitor festival as part of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention
The Durmitor Festival "Touch Durmitor: Be part of the World Heritage" will take place in Durmitor National Park, a site inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980, from 14-16 September 2012 in the frame of the Joint Programme on “Improving the business environment through green jobs and institution building” jointly implemented by UNESCO, UNDP, FAO, UNEP and UNIDO in Northern Montenegro.
It is also complementary to the Project “Sustainable Development Governance in the Durmitor Area in Montenegro” (DURMITOR) co-funded by the Veneto Region. Its aim is to enhance local governance processes while considering the need for a better integration between socio-economic development and the conservation and protection of natural and cultural assets of the Durmitor World Heritage site/Tara River Basin Biosphere Reserve.
The festival is organised as part of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, under the theme “World Heritage and Sustainable Development: the Role of Local Communities in the Management of World Heritage Sites”, with the specific aim to jointly promote sustainable activities in the World Heritage site of Durmitor and to introduce good practices in aligning actions and efforts for the recognition of the importance and values of the wider Durmitor area and its designations by the Montenegrin public.
