On 8 February, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova and the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Turkey to UNESCO, Mr. Hüsnü Gürcan Türkoğlu, signed an agreement formalizing Turkey’s contribution, amounting to $5 million, to the Multi-Donor Emergency Fund that was launched following the suspension of financial dues by the United States and Israel.

The Director-General expressed her deep appreciation to the Government of Turkey for its generous contribution to UNESCO, and underlined that priority programmes to be supported by the Fund will reflect areas of interest shared by UNESCO and Turkey. She reiterated her thanks to the Government of Turkey for its commitment to pay the regular budget contributions for 2012-2013 in full at the beginning of the year.

Irina Bokova expressed special thanks to the Prime Minister of Turkey, H.E. Mr Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, for the message of support that he conveyed to UNESCO during the 4th UN Alliance of Civilizations Forum held in Doha last December, and to the Turkish Government for the wide appeal they made to the international community as well as to Turkish private companies and foundations to extend their support to the Organization.

H.E Mr. Gürcan Türkoğlu said that Turkey’s contribution was modest in view of UNESCO’s achievements over the last 66 years. He pointed out that Turkey’s contribution to the Emergency Fund is not assigned to specific programmes or activities and that the priority areas expressed in the annex to the agreement were simply indicative. He informed the Director-General that instructions have already been given regarding the payment of Turkey’s assessed contributions for 2012-2013.
