UN Women Celebrates its Launch

UN Women, the new UN organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women, celebrates its launch. An evening event featuring music and film brings together political leaders, extraordinary women leaders, media personalities and celebrities.

SPEAKERS:

UN: General Assembly President Joseph Deiss, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet

Governments: Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad Bissessar, HRH Princess Cristina of Spain

Civil society: Nepalese activist Bandana Rana

Peacekeeping: Rakhi Sahi, former Commander of the all-female Formed Police Unit in Liberia

Media: ABC News anchor Christiane Amanpour (emcee), CNN founder and Chairman of the UN Foundation Ted Turner

Entertainment: UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and Academy Award winner

Nicole Kidman (via video link), Academy Award winner Geena Davis, performance of song “One Woman” composed for the event
