UNESCO has a long history of working with the country to protect its rich cultural heritage, to promote culture as a vector for development and as a means for enhancing regional cooperation among countries in South-East Europe, and to promote intercultural and interreligious dialogue as a means of contributing to peace and stability in the region.
Within the One UN Programme, UNESCO is responsible for leading a joint UN joint programme together with UNDP on Culture and Development: “Culture and Heritage for Social and Economic Development”. UNESCO is supporting the country in preserving and promoting both the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Albania, in preventing the illicit traffic of cultural heritage and other illegal actions. At the regional level, UNESCO is promoting dialogue among political leaders in countries of South-Eastern Europe as they work to create a common vision of the future that is based on international cooperation.
