MAB and WNBR bring added value to the fight against the negative impacts of climate change by applying an integrated, multidisciplinary approach. Biosphere reserves have a vital role to play in rapidly seeking and testing solutions to the challenges of climate change as well as monitoring these changes as part of a global network.

Within and outside UNESCO, Biosphere Reserves are promoted as areas for demonstrating adaptation measures for natural and human systems, assisting the development of resilience strategies and practices.  Buffer zones and transition areas of biosphere reserves may be used to test a variety of mitigation tactics and strategies. In numerous biosphere reserves, carbon sequestration constitutes a valuable ecosystem service, for example in forest and wetland systems.

Main activities include supporting climate change management in biosphere reserves and mobilizing biosphere reserves for field learning on climate change impacts and solutions.
