17 year-old Ms Misaki Sawano of Jonan-ku, Fukuoka City, and 11 other Japanese high school students visited Europe from March 21-26 as part of the international exchange programme on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), led by UNESCO. At the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris as well as at a high school in Heidelberg, Germany, the students made presentations on their activities concerning ESD.

The United Nations promotes ESD since 2005 in view of raising awareness in the future generation on the global environment. The visit of the students was organized within such a framework and Ms Sawano was among those who were selected through an essay contest.

Ms Sawano, who reported on her observation and nature conservation activities at the tidal flat Imazu of Fukuoka, said, “I was shocked by the fact that the coast where horseshoe crab lives is full of garbage. I want to study English more to become a researcher of earth science and to contribute to improving the environment"
