José P. Calvo is the Secretary General of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). He graduated in Geology in 1974 and earned his Doctor degree in Geological Sciences in 1978 at the University Complutense of Madrid in Spain. He started his job as Assistant Professor at the Politechnical University of Madrid in 1978 and moved to the University Complutense (Department of Petrology and Geochemistry) in 1980. In 1984 he was appointed to a stable Associate Professorship and obtained a Full Professorship in Petrology and Geochemistry in 2001. In parallel to teaching and research activities, he participated actively in the administration of the University Complutense, first as Secretary (1995-1998) and then as Head (1999-2003) of the Department of Petrology and Geochemistry. He was Editor-in-Chief (1996-1999) and President of the Geological Society of Spain from 2000 to 2004. In 2002, he was appointed Secretary General of the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) keeping this position until 2008. In 2004, he entered the Geological Survey of Spain (IGME) as Director General of this governmental organism. He participated in the administration of the European Geological Surveys (EGS) acting as President of this organization in 2008. In the same year, he was the Spanish responsible for the International Year of Planet Earth. In 2010 he came back to his position of Professor at the University of Madrid. He became Secretary General of IUGS by August 2014 and will serving in the job until 2016, when the 35th International Geological Congress will be held in Cape Town, South Africa.
His research interests encompass sedimentology of continental deposits, mainly in Cenozoic basins of the Mediterranean region, and geology of industrial minerals and rocks.
