The context

The new world economic paradigm shift presents Africa with new challenges and opportunities which necessitate strengthening Africa’s human and institutional capacities in teaching research and training in science, technology and innovation so as to influence human capital, youth employment, industrial and socio-economic development and inclusive growth.

The World Bank anticipates that the economies of sub-Saharan Africa will grow by 6% on average in 2013 (Africa Pulse, 2012), despite a fragile global economy. Discoveries of new oil, gas and mineral reserves in the past ten years bring with them the prospects of considerable revenue for newly resource-rich countries.

At the same time, climate change and rapid population growth pose potential threats to Africa’s economic resilience. If ignored, these trends could threaten health services, food security and nutrition, energy access and efficiency, water availability and environmental sustainability, youth employment and rational urban development. The role of universities in generating knowledge, in order to drive sustainable socio-economic development in Africa, is thus more urgent now than ever before.

The fifth conference in a series

This conference will be the fifth Conference of Vice Chancellors and Deans of Science, Engineering and Technology. ANSTI organizes this conference every two years, in order to provide a forum where university leaders, policy-makers and academics can discuss pertinent and strategic issues relevant to teaching and learning, skills training, research and innovation. These conferences offer an opportunity to share ideas and good practices and make recommendations on the way forward.
