TEACHING TECHNIQUES, SAFE SPACES AND MOBILE MIRACLES – THE COFIMVABA STORY


This workshop will introduce the Teacher Professional Development component of the ICT for Rural Education Development (ICT4RED) initiative. One module of a 10 module course will be presented to demonstrate how we have successfully facilitated ICT tablet integration in the classroom by teachers with little to no exposure to ICTs.  The main objective of the workshop is to present, through modeling, the elements that are critical to the success of the initiative. The novel approach focuses primarily on teaching strategies supported by technology, rather than vice-versa. The provision of technology in use rather than in case, termed “Earn as you Learn”, uses gamification facilitated through badges as a micro-accreditation system to successfully transform practice into 21st century teaching and learning.

OER4SCHOOLS: DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHING IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA


A practical introduction to OER4Schools: a professional development programme for low-resourced primary schools in sub-Saharan Africa. Participants will be introduced to how we are supporting interactive teaching of mathematics and science with digital technology. The programme is freely available as an Open Educational Resource  and builds on an established, sustained teacher-led process for sharing and reflection. Exploration of the multimedia resource during the workshop will include modelling of interactive teaching and proceed through a number of engaging activities on, for example, lesson pacing and effective questioning. The workshop is suitable for teachers and teacher educators, as well as anybody who has an interest in exploring interactive teaching. Please bring laptops or tablets where available to access the resource during the workshop.

FREE COLLABORATIVE APPS FOR IPADS & ANDROIDS: IN YOUR CLASSROOM NOW!


Collaboration is a key 21st century skill. But, teaching how and learning how to collaborate are real challenges! WeCollabrify’s suite of free educational productivity apps (WeWrite, WeMap, WeKWL, WeChart, WeSketchy on iOS & Android) provide support for synchronous collaboration - two or more students working at the same time on the same artifact (concept map, text document, etc.), each student using his/her device, while co-located (in class) or not co-located (each student is at home). WeCollabrify scaffolds learners collaborating by encouraging them to engage in discourse patterns (questioning, narrating, revising) that are the hallmarks of good collaborative behavior.

ONE2ACT! USING INSTANT FEEDBACK AND MOBILE DEVICES TO INCREASE STUDENTS LEARNING OUTCOME


The participants are invited to discuss and reflect on mobile learning pedagogics. Hands-on training sessions demonstrate how:

  • Immediate feedback mechanisms gathered from learners’ smartphones, tablets or computers, allow teachers to provide immediate and customized feedback to learners
  • Teachers get an instant overview of the students` understanding of the topic covered, using this to increase classroom interaction, group collaboration, and peer learning as a springboard for reflection and discussion
  •  Peer Learning Assessment System turns assignments, tests and exams into a learning arena, helping teachers to immediately focus their resources towards problem areas experienced during the assessment 

Participants acquire first-hand experience in understanding how to provide pedagogical support in such a way that learners immediately learn from their mistakes. Tools and methods may be applied World Wide.

LEARNING TO SMILE 101:MOBILE TECHNOLOGY AND TEACHING FOR INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING


Participants will gain hands-on experience with the technology, pedagogy, and real-time assessment capability behind Seeds of Empowerment’s program SMILE (Stanford Mobile Inquiry-based Learning Environment). SMILE is not only a mobile tool, but a means for transforming pedagogy within existing curriculum across all content areas. SoE seeks to equip teachers through mobile learning to create a space for students to become active agents of their own learning by actually doing the work of creating questions, leading to deeper learning and more critical thinking. SMILE was originally developed for the world’s most remote, underserved areas. Our SMILE Plug provides a private classroom cloud for up to 60 mobile devices. It’s said a smile can change the world. BYOD and come learn to SMILE with us!

USTAD MOBILE: BRING CONTENT DEVICE: LEAVE WITH YOUR MLEARNING COURSE


Ustad Mobile is an open source toolkit that enables anyone without programming experience to build mobile learning content including audio, video, quizzes, exercises and mini games that supports feature phones and smart phones.  During the workshop participants will learn how to use the authoring toolkit to put mLearning content together, track students even in disconnected environments, do assessments and track attendance.  Any participant who is able to operate MS Word or Powerpoint, will be able to use Ustad Mobile.

KM2 EDULOC – AN ENGAGING GEOLEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL


During this workshop participants will use mobile devices to explore one square kilometer around the UNESCO headquarters in Paris to discover what social, historical, and environmental assets it holds, and to create a unique multilayered census. Participants will learn to create their own geo-located projects with the Km2 Eduloc platform. 

The experience will show the appeal, the potential and how to use Km2 Eduloc to provide a rich and inclusive learning environment for educators and students and to encourage entrepreneurship among children and youth by involving them, actively, in their community. 

A wide range of STEM experiences already conducted with Km2 Eduloc will be presented.

USING MOBILE TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIAL MEDIA TO ENHANCE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE


This workshop will empower teachers to employ mobile technologies and social media in their work with students.  Based on a Learning Design Studio model, it ensures that participants will go home at the end of the day with concrete practical outcomes: resources and activity plans that can be put to work in educational contexts.  The Learning Design Studio follows a “Design Inquiry of Learning” cycle with teams of 4-6 participants working on a learning design project of their definition. They will investigate the educational context, identify an educational challenge within it, ideate and conceptualise a solution for this challenge, consider existing solutions to similar problems, prototype their solution and evaluate it.  At each phase, they will share their work with other teams for feedback and cross-fertilisation.

TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ON A PHONE: YES, THERE ARE APPS FOR THAT!


This workshop will provide participants with mobile phone apps for assisting teachers with professional development (PD) training and resources designed for supporting and engaging students from diverse underserved backgrounds, multi-languages, and multicultural global settings. Participants will also receive PD Apps that will assist them with selecting appropriate apps for their programs, content area, productivity, communication, online courses, and continuing education over their smart phones. Participants will receive a quality standard rubric for evaluating mobile apps for PD and create an individualized online App LiveBinder to continue their on-going professional development activities after the workshop.

Participants are encouraged to bring their smart phone (Apple, Androids, Windows, Blackberry, etc.) to learn how to use their device as an on-going PD and educational tool for teaching and learning.

DESIGNING FOR BIG IMPACT – THE ELEMENTS OF SUCCESS

 Designing for BIG Impact - workshop will offer a hands-on learning opportunity for designing a service for a large-scale mobile intervention that is both relevant and popular among the target users and financially sustainable. The participants in the workshop will jointly with presenters and other experts de-construct a successful service/product and analyze every component in detail.  We will start from the concept/idea and proceed to building the right partnerships and financial backing.  We will further analyze how the end-users have been engaged in the product/service design, and how the business model was built. The workshop will end at studying monitoring and evaluating of the service.

MOBILE LEARNING TEACHER’S TOOKIT: A WINDOW INTO TEACHER TRAINING

The aim of this workshop is to provide an overview on a Mobile Learning teacher’s toolkit, a comprehensive digital package that consists of a variety of teaching resources aimed at empowering teachers with the necessary resources and skills to significanty incorporate mobile technologies into their teaching and learning practices.

The toolkit is organized under three broad categories Conceptual Framework, Mobile Content and Tools for Mobile learning. They encompass the processes of methodological reflection and practical implementation. The conceptual framework is addressed to provide a methodological background on Mobile Learning and its implications for teaching and learning. The Mobile Content category addresses the issue of providing teachers with a set of practical, innovative and sustainable strategies to involve teachers in the development, delivery, and evaluation of mobile content.  The third and last category, Tools for Mobiles Learning, is aimed at empowering teachers with a mindful set of mobile learning tools for a successful transition from theory to practice which involves, at the same time, reflection and deep thinking
