World Teachers’ Day 2012
World Teachers’ Day was created by UNESCO in 1994 to reward the efforts and achievements of teachers and is held annually on 5 October. In Tonga the Ministry of Education and Training prepared and organized World Teachers’ Day for 2012 using the theme of “Take a Stand for Teachers”. They celebrated this day with events and activities to promote awareness of teachers’ efforts and sacrifices. A panel discussion and Thanks-giving events with a special Keynote address from Dr. Tu’ipulotu Katoanga, a former teacher and church leader, were held and broadcasted on national radio and TV services. Outer island schools also participated in World Teachers’ Day celebrations to appreciate teachers in the field.
