2015年7月14日,巴黎 - 近日,联合国教科文组织科学与技术咨询委员会赴马达加斯加特派团确认了Sainte Marie岛附近的沉船遗址的历史地位,并评估了对该沉船遗址的发掘。该发掘最终宣告发现了之前声称的可能存在于Adventure Galley沉船上的银条,这是一艘与海盗William Kidd有关的沉船。 

这次特派团任务表明在Sainte-Marie岛湾确实存在着数个历史残骸。然而,根据咨询委员会专家,原本被认为是海盗船长基德的Adventure Galley的沉船其实是Sainte-Marie港口设施的一部分。尚无任何沉船残骸被发现。此外,很显然从该遗址打捞的金属锭也不是“金银财宝”,它的95 %都由铅构成,并不含银,被鉴定为铅压载物件。

“事实上真正的‘新闻’并不是没有发现金银财宝”,联合国教科文组织咨询委员会特派团团长Michel L'Hour说道,“而是有人可以协助并代表政府进行调查。各国通过缔结2001年公约就水下考古的最佳实践达成一致,建立了科学与技术咨询委员会,这个委员会的建立才是真正的‘新’闻。” 咨询委员会同该领域内最可靠的专家一起,对缔约国的请求进行帮助。

该特派团的其他调查结果表明本来被认为是荷兰海盗船Fiery Dragon的残骸实际上是一艘巨型亚洲船只,该船只建造于印度,被海盗掠夺后遗弃于该海湾。然而,在遗迹清单和博物馆中并没有2010年从该亚洲沉船打捞的的文物,尤其是数枚金币的踪影,而这些文物将有助于判断该遗址。此外,这些发现物的打捞、登记、存放与保护并未遵循科学的标准,这破坏了遗址的科学记录,而且使得理解其历史背景愈加困难。

就进一步研究而言,科学与技术咨询委员会建议严格按照联合国教科文组织2001年保护水下文化遗产公约附件的规章,仅允许由具有资质的水下考古学家带领的专业队伍进行的干预。
