Mission
The social and behavioural sciences are those disciplines that develop and test models and interpretations of individuals and society in order to explain how humans behave and change in interaction with each other and with the natural world.
The mission of the ISSC is to advance the social sciences – their quality, novelty and utility – in all parts of the world.
The ISSC works
The ISSC's domain ranges across the study of individual cognitive processes to global complexities such as human impacts on climate change. The ISSC encompasses the diversity of paradigms and tools used in the social sciences as well as the broad scope of critical reflections on science and society.
The ISSC regularly monitors and evaluates the status and contributions of the social sciences as a basis for evidence-informed policymaking.
The activities of the Council are guided by the principles of academic freedom, pursuit of excellence, equitable access to scientific information and data, unfettered conduct of science, open communication and transparency, accountability, and the use of knowledge for societal value. In addition, the ISSC seeks to support the participation of women, minorities and others under-represented in social science research.
In pursuing its goals of transmitting learning and advancing knowledge through education, research and discovery, the Council works with leading scientific organisations, data bases, funders, researchers and policy makers from all over the world.
