Research Training:
ISSC-UNESCO Summer Schools on Comparative Research in the Social Sciences

The ISSC-UNESCO Summer Schools on Comparative Research in the Social Sciences were initiated in 2000 by Professor Nikolai Genov, member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and Professor at the Institute of Sociology in Sofia and the Freie Universität in Berlin.

The Summer Schools are organised every two years and are held in Sofia, Bulgaria. They are supported by the ISSC under the auspices of its Framework Agreement with UNESCO. With the backing of the governments of Bulgaria and Turkey, the last two Summer Schools – held in 2004 and 2006 respectively – received additional financial support from UNESCO’s Participation Programme.

Each Summer School focuses on a different aspect of comparative social science research. Distinguished researchers, known for their comparative research, are invited to deliver lectures and participate in debates. ‘Students’ of the Summer Schools are themselves teachers or researchers; they include up to 35 doctoral and post-doctoral students and young scholars who are generally not more than 35 years of age and come mostly from developing countries. The Summer School sessions are organised and chaired by these students, who are also given an opportunity to present and discuss their own research projects. In addition, experiences from organised cultural trips in Sofia and nearby historical sites provide participants with topics for discussion about local social problems and politics. Summer Schools, which continue to be directed by Professor Genov, typically last between 10 and 12 days.

The ISSC is currently planning to hold its next international Summer School in September 2009. The focus of this session will be on Comparative Social Science Research and Social Policies. All information about this event will be posted here as it becomes available. Information may also be obtained from:
