Rome, Italy

Signature of the report of the meeting

A regional tripartite workshop on the project of setting up a consultation mechanism for the North Western Sahara Aquifer System (NWSAS) was held at the FAO headquarter in Rome 19 and 20 December 2003 with the participation of representatives of the three countries sharing the NWSAS basin (Algeria, Tunisia and Libya), the OSS and FAO.

The participants agreed on an evolutionary approach in two steps for setting up the Consultation Mechanism for the NWSAS. During the first step, a light structure taking the form of a unity of coordination will be managed and sheltered by the OSS. In a second phase, this unity can be an autonomous structure more elaborated and with specific attributions following the recommendations of the three countries.
