Mr
Henri Konan Bédié “ (…) I would like to turn to you, in order to address my warmest congratulations to His Majesty King Juan Carlos, winner of the 1994 Prize. An exceptional man, his courage, his understanding and his determination, which have already become legendary, have allowed Spain to become one of the firmest democracies in the world. He was the liberator of the Spanish people's genius, the builder of modern Spain. The task he carried out in his homeland can be compared to what Félix Houphouët-Boigny and General de Gaulle accomplished for the dignity of their countries. The Father of Spanish democracy and protector of the weak and of minorities, he is also one of the pillars of peace in the world. His role in the Israeli- Arab rapprochement is well known. His many interventions to solve conflicts and strengthen peace in Latin America and Africa secure peace and security for millions of men, women and children. (…) The second prizewinner, as stated in the official announcement of the Jury’s decisions, is President Jimmy Carter who, in his own personal capacity has on many occasions contributed to the pursuit of peace in many different parts of the world and has, as a private citizen, managed to make his contribution to peace. As President of the United States of America, President Carter achieved remarkable successes in his action in pursuit of peace. The Camp David Agreement, which opened up the way to the peace process in the Middle East, the SALT II Treaty on Disarmament, and the Treaties concerning the Panama Canal, are, among other achievements, his work. At the end of his presidential mandate in 1981, Jimmy Carter continued his combat for peace, through the Carter Center which he founded in Atlanta. Struggling against poverty, illness and the injustices resulting from under-development, relentlessly promoting democracy and human rights, President Carter has distinguished himself only recently through numerous goodwill missions for peace in Liberia, Haiti, Bosnia and East Africa (...)." ____________ Mr
Mário Soares “ (…) His Majesty Don Juan Carlos, for whom I have deep affection, respect and admiration, has, with an extraordinary sense of his State duties, played a decisive part in consolidating a modern constitutional monarchy that defends the principles of freedom, tolerance, justice and public-spiritedness. During the exemplary and highly complex process of democratic transition in Spain and the vast Spanish-American continent, and more recently, during the Barriloche Summit in Argentina, his inestimable work has been widely acclaimed. The substantial assistance that Mr Jimmy Carter has given in varied fields to the cause of peace and solidarity also deserves our deep gratitude and admiration. In addition to a number of notable foreign policy successes achieved by his administration -such as the Camp David Agreements, the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, the Salt II treaty with the former Soviet Union and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and China, Jimmy Carter, through the Center that he now runs and as a special envoy of President Clinton, has also built up intense activity which has made a significant contribution to the settlement of regional conflicts and the promotion of democracy and respect for human rights throughout the world (…).” ____________ Mr Boutros
Boutros-Ghali “ (…) The global society in which we will live from now on requires us to embrace a noble ideal of peace. For we know very well that peace is not simply the absence of war: it can only be achieved and consolidated through development and democratisation. Peace demands of us solidarity and continuity -and the United Nations, as we are all aware, is an irreplaceable instrument for promoting peaceful relations among peoples. But peace also depends, as we know, on the political will of States and on the dedication of all men of good will to its service (…).” |
