“ (…) The two prizewinners whose names have now been added to the list of peace heroes are Mr Fidel V. Ramos, President of the Republic of the Philippines, and Mr Nur Misuari, Chairman of the Moro National Liberation Front.

As a rule, the longer a war goes on, the more difficult it is to end it. The conflict which racked the south of the Philippine archipelago, and the island of Mindanao in particular, is no exception to the rule. When President Ramos and Mr Misuari undertook to seek the means of a peaceful solution, hostilities had been going on for twenty-six years(..).”

From their joint determination came peace. For on 2 September 1996, the Government of the Philippines and the Moro National Liberation Front signed the historic agreement putting an end to the guerrilla war in the island of Mindanao (…) . ”
