  MAJOR EVENTS
Fifth International Conference on Seismology and Earthquake Engineering (SEE 5)
14-16 May 2007 organized by the International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES), will be held in Tehran, Iran.

In recent years major earthquakes have devastated many parts of the world. Asian countries have been affected by disastrous events. Lessons drawn from these tragedies, as well as the follow-up to the UN World Conference on Disaster Reduction provide a unique window of opportunity to raise international awareness of the importance of the effective implementation of a comprehensive earthquake risk reduction programme in Iran, as well as hazard-prone developing countries. This conference will address professionals from a broad range of disciplines committed to reducing the impact of earthquakes on the built environment (seismotectonic, seismology, earthquake prediction, geotechnical earthquake engineering, structural earthquake engineering, public awareness and risk management).

3rd Exploration for Disaster Prevention Forum, Tokyo
January 20, 2007 - The 3rd Exploration for Disaster Prevention Forum will be organized in Tokyo by the General Insurance Association of Japan (GIAJ), under the co-auspices of UNESCO, the Asahi Shimbun Co. newspaper, and the Nippon Volunteer Network Active in Disaster, a local NGO, in the framework of the "Tokyo Disaster Prevention Fair 2007", organized by the Cabinet Office.

5th Session of Board of Representatives of International Consortium on Landslides
23-24 November 2006
The 5th session of the BoR of the ICL, which will take place at UNESCO Headquarters, in Paris (Room XIII) will be opened by Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura, UNESCO Director General. The meeting will examine the report of the 2006 Tokyo Action Plan, and the conferment of the 2006 Varnes Medal, together with best paper Awards. The Varnes Medal is the highest award provided by the ICL which recognizes, among other things, professional excellence in landslide research, and significant contributions to public education regarding landslide hazard. The session will also report on ongoing projects and examine new project proposals (see detailed agenda).

VCD Community Based Disaster Management
IDEP has developed a comprehensive Community Based Disaster Management (CBDM) kit for use in villages throughout Indonesia. The kit is simple and practical, containing a practical planning and action manual with over 50 practical self-help forms, 2 colored posters, 8 disaster comics and a community awareness leaflet. These materials cover detailed planning and action steps for community disaster prevention and preparedness, disaster response and disaster recovery. Designed for use by trainers, the kit is presented in simple language appropriate for grass roots communities throughout Indonesia.

Contact
