UNESCO and the International Year of Astronomy (IYA)

The International Year of Astronomy (IYA 2009) will be a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture. It aims to stimulate worldwide interest in astronomy and science with emphasis on education, public engagement and involvement of young people, with events at national, regional, and global levels throughout the year under the central theme: The Universe, Yours to Discover.

Furthermore, the IYA aims at:

  • Highlighting global cooperation for peaceful purposes in the search for our cosmic origins and the common heritage which connects all citizens of planet Earth.
  • Promoting widespread access to the universal knowledge of fundamental science through the excitement of astronomy and sky-observation as well as conveying the merits of scientific method and critical thinking to larger audience.
  • Empowering astronomical communities in developing countries through the initiation and stimulation of international collaborations.
  • Supporting and improving formal and informal science education with emphasis on the links between science education and science careers and thus increasing student enrolment in the fields of science and technology.
  • Balancing the gender and minorities representation of professionals in scientific and engineering careers.
