Space Education Programme (SEP)

SEP workshops in developing countries In order to reach a maximum number of target audiences, especially students and teachers/educators at secondary level, workshops are conducted in several cities in one country. Around 100-150 students and 30-50 teachers/educators in each city participate in the workshop.

These workshops are held in cooperation with the country's national space-related institution and/or country's National Commission for UNESCO, with the support of national and local scientific institutes, planetaria, observatories, space-related NGOs and associations and Regional/Cluster/National Offices of UNESCO.

Space education team
Experts from space agencies and space-related institutions are invited by UNESCO to give lectures on various space themes and demonstrate best teaching practices and hands-on projects.

Donation of portable telescopes
Through an agreement between UNESCO and Meade Instruments Co portable Meade (ETX) telescopes are donated by UNESCO to schools at each workshop venue.

Pilot national space education programme
To ensure the sustainability of this activity, a pilot "National Space Education Programme (NSEP)" is drafted by the organizing committee with the advice of the space education team. A steering committee is set up to ensure the follow-up of activities. The pilot NSEP is intended to become the blueprint for space activities in the country.

SEP workshops have been organized in the Philippines (Oct 2004), Nigeria (May 2005), Colombia (November 2005), Vietnam (March 2006) and Ecuador (May 2007).

In 2008, workshops will be organized in Tanzania and Ecuador, the latter on a subregional level.
