FOCUS ON JOHANNESBURG
Johannesburg Summit 2002

First UN interagency meeting on the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development
On 5 September, UNESCO hosted the first inter-agency meeting on the forthcoming UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). Opened by the Director-General, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, the meeting was attended by representatives from 10 agencies: FAO, ILO, UNAIDS, UNEP, UNESCO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNU, the World Bank and WFP. UNESCO has been designated lead agency for the promotion of the Decade, which will be launched in January 2005.

During the Decade, UNESCO will work with UN agencies and key stakeholders to incorporate quantitative and qualitative indicators for education for sustainable development (ESD) into on-going monitoring and evaluation of Education for All (EFA) and the UN Literacy Decade. It wil also monitor the progress of activities undertaken by UN agencies, governments and NGOs in observance of the Decade and facilitate implementation and follow-up. In parallel, UNESCO will evaluate the achievement of measurable results in realising the aims and objectives of the Decade, particularly with regard to the integration of ESD in national educational policies, programmes and systems. UNESCO will draw on the lessons learnt from the Decade to make recommendations on how to promote further ESD.

In his remarks, the Director-General stressed that 'the ‘education’ in ESD is not just formal schooling but embraces a wide range of learning experiences and programmes'. UNESCO will be making its own substantive contributions to ESD in addition to stimulating action and co-operation through its role as lead agency for the Decade.
