The
Virtual University: Models and Messages lessons from Case Studies
Report by UNESCO’s Paris-based International Institute for Educational
Planning, presents an overview of the different types of on-line
institutions, how they operate, who they serve and the different
issues policy-makers and education authorities must grapple
with when developing virtual education services. While 'both
developed and developing countries could benefit from these
new methods of education delivery […]', the report says, 'countries
or specific groups within countries could become even further
disadvantaged' by the lack of ICT infrastructure:

Status
of Coral Reefs of the World 2002
Joint UNESCO-IOC, UNEP, IUCN, World Bank biennial report, 378
pp., English only.
Describes
case studies on coral issues and dispels doubts as to the
value of establishing no-take areas to protect fish stocks
and encourage better coral growth; notes that, four years
after 16% of the worlds coral reefs were destroyed by
massive global coral bleaching during the big El Niño
year, half are showing signs of recovery; predicts that many
of the worlds coral reefs will continue to decline,
owing to increasing levels of sediment and nutrient pollution
from sewage and agricultural runoff, and massive over-fishing
(including using bombs and poisons). Request a free copy,
while stocks last, from: ioc@unesco.org
