World Conference on Science

26 June - 01 July 1999
Science is a powerful means of understanding the world in which we live, and is also capable of yielding enormous returns that directly enhance socio-economic development and the quality of our lives. Scientific advances over the last fifty years have led to revolutionary changes in health, nutrition and communication; moreover, the role of science promises to be yet greater in the future because of ever-more-rapid scientific progress.

A Century of Nobel Prizes

08 - 10 April 1999
Paris, April 8 {No.99-70} - The international conference, A Century of Nobel Prizes, Science & Humanism, taking place from April 8 to 10, was opened today by UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor and René Lenoir, former French government minister for social affairs who represented French President Jacques Chirac, at Organization Headquarters.
Eight Nobel laureates from various disciplines, as well as young scientists, sociologists and philosophers are taking part in the event during which debates will focus on major scientific discoveries and conceptual changes, the economy, human rights and the future of the planet.
