Launched in Jamaica in 1998, Cariscience is a UNESCO network of R&D and post-graduate programmes in the basic
sciences in five Caribbean countries: Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad & Tobago.
Organized by active researchers for researchers, its main objective is to promote academic excellence
and improve the quality of scientific research in the region by assisting scientists and encouraging
co-operation. As part of this effort, Cariscience launched the Caribbean Young Scientist Fellowship
Programme in January 2004 and has established links with the diaspora.
