Prime Minister Mitchell convenes high-level meeting to ‘change the fortunes of the Caribbean’


Countries from the Caribbean Common Market (CARICOM) are meeting in Grenada on 9 April to discuss a report on Using Science, Technology and Innovation to change the Fortunes of the Caribbean Region. The report was prepared by Dr Khotso Mokhele, former President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Research Foundation of South Africa, under a consultancy commissioned by UNESCO and the CARICOM Steering Committee on Science and Technology.

The report takes a critical look at the status of science and technology (S&T) in the Caribbean. It also makes a number of recommendations for transforming the S&T landscape to foster development of the region. The topics for discussion include the creation of a Caribbean Science Foundation, strengthening the Caribbean higher education sector, funding for research and development and high-impact projects.

The high-level meeting is being convened by the Right Hon. K. Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada and Head of the CARICOM Quasi-Cabinet for Science and Technology. The CARICOM Steering Committee on Science and Technology is headed by Professor Harold Ramkissoon.

The meeting will be attended by ministers of science and technology, heads of tertiary institutions and captains of industry.
