Cooperation Garyounis University

 

Within the framework of the Libyan five-year Human and Economic Development Plan 1980-1986, it has been decided that the building of the Faculty of Engineering at Garyounis University should be incorporated in the University campus at Benghazi. To facilitate this integration, the University has requested UNESCO assistance. In 1981, an Agreement was signed between UNESCO and the Garyounis University. Both institutions agreed that UNESCO caries out specific activities on behalf of the University on a fund-in-trust basis. The entire cost of the project is estimated at US$21,588,255 including overhead cost.

Following the list of Services to be provided by UNESCO:

  1. Procurement of equipment and its installation
    UNESCO procures equipment in accordance with the lists provided by the University giving full specifications and specifying exact models considered to be the most appropriate for the University curricula, and taking into account the quality of supporting services, software, makers' performance records, special technical features, etc., as well as material costs, except where more suitable equipment might be agreed upon between UNESCO and the University. UNESCO also has to coordinate the installation of the equipment at the University, as well as arrange the training of Libyan technicians in the use of the equipment, wherever necessary, by the companies providing the equipment.
  2. Training
    UNESCO organizes necessary training activities for Libyan specialists and technicians in the installation, maintenance and running of the equipment to be procured. UNESCO also arrange that such training programmes will be available in the factories of the suppliers of the equipment whenever necessary and that the suppliers guarantee that they will keep open such facilities for trainees as long as possible.
  3. Technical assistance
    UNESCO provides technical assistance on arrangements concerning store-keeping and organize necessary consultative missions for particular technical problems as and when these arise. UNESCO also provides any other services which may be agreed upon between UNESCO and the University.

A quarter of century after its inception, the cooperation is still going on. In 2006, UNESCO conducting the project the installation of equipment in the Faculty of Engineering.
