World Conference on Science

In June 1999, UNESCO and the International Council for Science (ICSU) organized the World Conference on Science in Budapest (Hungary). For the first time, the world’s governments and the international scientific community gathered under one roof to prepare a new ‘social contract’ for science in the twenty-first century.

The World Conference on Science gave rise to a number of global initiatives sponsored by UNESCO. Among these are:

Budapest +10

In November 2009, the theme of the World Science Forum will be a 10-year review of follow-up to the World Conference. The Forum will analyse how many countries have espoused the new social contract for science over the past decade and to what effect. (More)
