THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION ON ARABIC-ISLAMIC SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

P r e s e n t a t i o n

UNESCO-WICS-ALECSO

(Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed; Ignorance of each other's ways and lives has been a common cause, throughout the history of mankind, of that suspicion and mistrust between the peoples of the world through which their differences have all too often broken into war)....

Constitution of UNESCO

It is within the objective of building a lasting culture of peace that UNESCO, ISESCO, ALECSO and WICS have decided to organize this Exhibition.

Islamic civilization was an important link in the cultural and scientific history of the western old world. From the ninth century AD and until the end of the fifteenth, Islamic civilization was leading in all fields of science, technology and medicine.

The transfer of Arabic-Islamic sciences to the West through various channels paved the way to the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution in Europe.

The general public in the West is unaware of the important
contributions of
Islamic civilization to the heritage of the West and of mankind.

One of the objectives of the Exhibition is to bridge this gap in knowledge and to present in an effective and visual manner the major achievements of civilization.

The exhibition will be the occasion to stress the spirit of tolerance, which characterized that period.

We owe a special acknowledgement to Dr. Fuat SEZGIN, Director of the Institute of Arabic-Islamic Sciences, without whom the organization of this Exhibition would have been impossible.

The exhibition will be divided into different departments and sections:

The Exact and Natural Sciences
(Astronomy, Mathematics, Optics, physics, etc..)

Applied Science Technology
Architecture and Civil Engineering, Alchemy and Chemical Technology, Glass, and Pottery, Mining and Metallurgy, Agricultural Technology, Navigation, etc
The Life and Medical Sciences
