LATVIA
The World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) is celebrated worldwide on 10 November 2005 each year. Therefore it is my great pleasure to inform you that Latvia will join this event and will celebrate it by undertaking concrete actions and initiatives also this year.

During this week Latvian National Commission for UNESCO together with University of Latvia, Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia, British Council in Latvia and other organizations related to science, will organize different activities concerning science and science related themes. The main aim of these activities and initiatives is to raise populations' interest about science and its importance in society's development.
From 6th to 10th November University of Daugavpils organizes Science Festival with the goal to propagate science and develop science prestige. The wide programme of the Festival includes lectures, competitions and discussions about science topics for different target audiences involving school adults, students and scholars: professors and academicians - the main contributors.

On 7th and 10th November a number of scientific institutes will propose so called "Open day" to those who are interested in the research work in their future life. Five leading Science Institutes have arranged a good cooperation and elaborated programmes not only in the Basic Sciences but also in Social and Human Sciences. This activity will be available to the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network.

On 10th November Café Scientifique (Science and Parliament discussion) will take place at University of Latvia. The main aim of the event is to bring together scientists and politicians for a dialogue on science and science policy. This discussion allows the science and research community to exchange views and debate key issues with Latvian policy makers.
