DLR’s radar satellite TerraSAR-X monitors land subsidence in Mexico city

Mexico City is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Water is in short supply and increasing amounts of groundwater are being extracted to meet the city’s needs, resulting in significant land subsidence problems. Monitoring the historic centre to understand how it is moving is now essential for its preservation!

The German Aerospace Centre (DLR) has been assisting UNESCO with this issue. DLR used its TerraSAR-X radar satellite, imaging the city from space from September 2009 to January 2010 and tracking changes.

Space for schools:

Satellites are also following the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010!

The French space agency (CNES), a UNESCO space partner of the ‘Open Initiative’, acquired 10 satellite images of the 2010 football World Cup stadiums in South Africa using the Korean satellite KOMPSAT-2.
We support this idea of gather and process all these satellite images as a proof of the uses of space for the people. By looking at these ten stadiums seen by satellite, the general public can better understand the high-precision of a satellite’s potential (one-metre-resolution).

Over 200 participants at the UNESCO-EARSel International Symposium

11 June 2010, Paris, France

The 30th International Symposium on Remote Sensing, which takes place in a different European city each year, was held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, from 31 May to 3 June 2010.

The high level of participation in the symposium was unprecedented, as over 200 participants were registered, coming from Africa, Central Asia, Eastern and Western Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Russian Federation, and the United States, among others.
