ICET putting together virtual library on sustainable technologies

April 2001 The International Council for Engineering and Technology (ICET) has presented a project for a virtual library of engineers for sustainable development to UNESCO as part of follow-up to the World Conference on Science.

The ICET-UNESCO virtual library on sustainable technologies implements a specific recommendation of the Science Agenda. Paragraph 35 namely calls on ‘competent international organizations, including UNESCO and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), to promote the establishment of a freely accessible virtual library on sustainable technologies.’

Paragraph 35 goes on to recommend that the public and private sectors at national and international levels provide strong support for research on clean and sustainable technologies, recycling, renewable energy resources and efficient use of energy.

The library is to be developed within a framework agreement signed by UNESCO and ICET on 16 March 1999 (see also WCS Newsletter, 5 March 2001).

ICET is an umbrella organization grouping the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and International Union of Technical Associations and Organizations (UATI).
