30th Anniversary of MAB Programme in Cuba

 

The main activity held by the Cuban MAB Committee to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the UNESCO Programme "Man and Biosphere" took place on 1st December with a Commemorative Workshop with the presence of Dr. Peter Bridgewater, Director of the Division of Ecological Sciences (SC/ECO) of UNESCO, Mr. Fabio Fajardo, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) and Dr. Raúl Roa Kourí, President of the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO, and other personalities of CITMA and members of the MAB Cuban Committee.

The MAB International Co-ordination Council during its November 2000 meeting recommended Member States and MAB National Commissions to observe the Anniversary of the Programme throughout the year 2001. In response to this request, the Cuban MAB Committee carried out a programme that covered among other actions Plenary Meetings of the MAB Committee, the publication of the document "Cuba’s International Environmental Policy and its result at International Level", as a contribution to "Universidad para Todos"(March), the Workshop Rio+10 (April), a Round Table on Biosphere Reserves, held in the framework of the Third International Convention on Environment and Development, (June) which was also the main scenario for the celebration in Cuba of the World Environmental Day.

The Commemorative Workshop, activity that closed the Cuban celebrations of MAB’s Programme, was held in the CITMA’s main office. During its first session the President of the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO mentioned the contributions and the role of UNESCO in Cuba, Lic. Orlando Rey, Director of Environmental Policies of CITMA, explained the System of Protected Areas in Cuba, Dr. Jorge Mario Fernández, Director of the Center for Management, Information and Environmental Education based his remarks on the issue of Education Strategies of the Environmental Education in Cuba and Dr. María Herrera, President of the Cuban MAB Committee mentioned the significance of 30th Anniversary of the MAB Programme.

In the second session of the Workshop a scientific activity was held with the presentation of Biosphere Reserves of Guanahacabibes, Zapata Swamp and Cuchillas del Toa.

Mr. Fabio Fajardo, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, made closing remarks underlining the high acknowledgement of the MAB Programme by his Ministry, as well as the actions that the MAB Cuban Committee implemented in the country.
