UNESCO - 21 March 2003

YOUTH AGAINST DISCRIMINATION

First and foremost, planned events are aimed at younger generations, who will one day bear the heavy burden of tackling racism and discrimination. Workshops on artistic expression against discrimination, reflections on the concept of race, and on deciphering representations conveyed through advertising, the media, and academic journals are organized for youth.

9:00 – 10:00 Welcoming of Youth Participants (Hall in front of Room XII)

10:00 – 11:00 Screening of Short-Films (Room IX)

11:00 – 13:00 Workshops against Racism

Four workshops, organized by FFCU (Fédération Française des Clubs UNESCO), will take place simultaneously, and will be attended by youth from various UNESCO clubs across France.

  • Workshop 1 (Room IV): Deciphering Images: Representations Conveyed through Advertising, the Media, and Academic Journals. Organized in partnership with CLEMI (Centre de liaison de l’enseignement et des moyens de l’information).

  • Workshop 2 (Room III): Presentation of materials produced by UNESCO Clubs to combat discrimination (books, games, videos, etc.).

  • Workshop 3 (Room VI): Reflection on the Concept of Race and Racial Prejudice. Youth will prepare a "Declaration" relating to this theme, which will be presented before the screening of "Journey of Man," a documentary on the racial origin of humanity.

  • Workshop 4 (Room IX): Art Against Discrimination. The message of racial tolerance will be manifested through various forms of artistic expression (paintings, caricatures, photos, theatre, poetry, etc.).
