South Africa : Beyond a Miracle (2001; 54 minutes) "South Africa : Beyond a Miracle" chronicles the evolution of South Africa from the tragic years of apartheid to the recent elections and the cautious building of democracy. The film focuses on testimony of seven people - key witnesses to the collateral damage of apartheid and to the hope of restoring a nation to democracy. It challenges the viewer to look at the brutal racist government and the recent elections, and then consider the many problems - unemployment, AIDS, poverty, and crime - that still burden the hope-filled but fragile South African world. Shot on location in Johannesburg, Soweto, Pretoria, Capetown, Port Elisabeth, and Durban, the documentary presents a score of other interviews, layering the work with the political, cultural, religious, and social richness of South Africa.
