Advocacy

Advocating for literacy, non-formal education and adult and lifelong learning as crucial elements of policy frameworks worldwide is one of the pillars of UIL's work. In order to help advance the goals of Education for All (EFA), the UN Literacy Decade (UNLD) and the Decade for Sustainable Development (DESD), as well as the objectives of the CONFINTEA agenda, UIL promotes awareness and facilitates the dissemination and sharing of knowledge, policy dialogues and debates.

All of UIL's activities are geared towards mobilizing and sensitizing for lifelong learning as an overarching principle for reforming teaching and learning systems. This includes the promotion of the right to education and learning of all, and an enhanced understanding of adult learning as a right, a tool, a shared responsibility and a fundamental joy. Learners themselves, with their aspirations, their specific projects and their different learning practices, are increasingly at the focus of the mobilization strategies, as target groups but also as advocates.

Ultimately, advocacy for UIL envisions making learning and education a means for impacting on personal, community and human development and empowerment, for active citizenship, and for improving the lives of people.
