The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning is a cooperating partner of the "Frankfurt Book Fair Literacy Campaign/LitCam" , a new initiative establishing the theme "Education for the Future" as a new priority of the World's Largest Book Fair. The initiative was launched at an international opening event on 2 October 2006 under the patronage of the Indian novelist Shashi Tharoor. This year's LitCam event will take place on 9 October in Frankfurt. Speakers will be Shashi Tharoor, Adama Ouane, Director of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, and Savita Singh, Director of the International Centre of Gandhian Studies and Research. Literacy and basic education projects from Uganda (Patrick Kiirya, LABE), Egypt (Laila Iskandar, CID), France (Marie-Thérèse Geffroy, ANLCI) and Spain (Monica Aymerich, ACEFIR) will be presented. Workshops will be held on "Adult Literacy Learning through Distance Education in Ireland" (Tom O'Mara, NALA, Ireland); "Literacy with Immigrants" (Monica Aymerich, ACEFIR, in cooperation with the German expert Elke Schlösser); "Quick Reads: A Success Story from the UK" (Kathy Gale, Quick Reads and Richard Crabb, NIACE). Google will present its Literacy Site, which was launched at last year's LitCam. The programme also includes presentations by learners and an exhibition of various international organizations working in the field of literacy and basic education. The event will be moderated by Neil McClelland, former Director of the National Literacy Trust, England, and Regina Krieger, editor at the German newspaper "Handelsblatt"..
