The second Regional Meeting on LIFE in Africa was organized jointly by the UNESCO Field Office in Maputo, the Dakar-based Regional Bureau for Education in Africa (BREDA) and the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), and took place from 29 to 31 January 2008 in Maputo, Mozambique. Sixteen African LIFE countries attended, and the meeting was supported by the presence of Brazil, Haiti and South Sudan. A common understanding of the LIFE vision and strategy was developed and innovative experiences in different areas of literacy were shared. Participants also discussed common priority areas of concern. A series of presentations revealed the shared lessons learned from the first-round LIFE countries (Haiti, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Sudan). Country teams developed future activities for the 2008-2009 biennium. The overall conclusions are summarised in the Maputo Strategic Platform for LIFE, a comprehensive and forward-looking document adopted on the last day of the meeting.
