2014 UNESCO International Literacy Prizes
UNESCO is committed to supporting effective literacy policies and programmes. To that effect, the Organization honours excellence and innovation in the field of literacy throughout the world.
Every year, on the occasion of International Literacy Day (8 September), UNESCO awards the International Literacy Prizes to institutions, organizations and individuals whose efforts contribute to the promotion of dynamic literate societies.
All programmes receiving a UNESCO International Literacy Prize in 2014 are already covered in the Effective Literacy Practices Database. The successful programmes contained in LitBase are:
- Ecuador’s ‘Basic Education for Youth and Adults Project’ which has reached close to 325,000 beneficiaries since 2011.
- Burkina Faso’s Association for Promoting Non-Formal Education is recognized for the ‘Empowerment of Women Living in Extreme Poverty in Burkina Faso’ programme.
- The Algerian Association for Literacy IQRAA, whose name means reading in Arabic, a non-governmental organization founded in 1990, received a prize for its programme on ‘Literacy, Training and Integration of Women.’
- The Lifelong Learning School for Community Development Poligono Sur (Spain) will receive one of the UNESCO Confucius Prizes for Literacy for its ‘Networking as an Educational Project’
- The Molteno Institute for Language and Literacy (South Africa) and the International Literacy Institute will receive the UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy for the ‘Bridges to the Future Initiative’
