Garden
of Peace Originally,
Noguchi was only supposed to create the delegates' patio. He finally convinced
the architects and the Artistic Councellors that the space between the
main building (1) and the building 3 should be bridged and made his proposals
for a Japanese "inspired" Garden as well. Together, the dwarf trees, cherry trees, plum trees, magnolias, bamboo trees, 80 tons of rocks, the small stream, little lake, bridge and flowers represent the harmony between nature and the acts of mankind. The Peace Fountain, a tall source stone, the largest stone in the garden set in a rectangular pool with water cascading over Noguchi's mirror-image Japanese inspired calligraphy for the word 'peace'. Everything
found in the garden has been brought to UNESCO directly from Japan as
a gift from Japan in 1958 when the building was constructed. |
