"The Symbolic Globe" (1995)
Erik Reitzel (Denmark)

Danish engineer, Erik Reitzel, who designed the internal structure of the Grande Arche de la Défense in Paris, created The Symbolic Globe whose form recalls the globe symbol of the United Nations. Constructed in six days, the transparent globe forms a four-ton spherical grid composed of 10,000 rods and joints of extra-hard aluminium bolted together.A small golden sphere is suspended in the centre of the globe.

The Symbolic Globe was first erected in March 1995 in Copenhagen on the occasion of the World Summit for Social Development, with the participation of delegates to the Summit who each assembled parts of it.

Made available to UNESCO by the Danish Ministry of Culture on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of UNESCO.
