Understanding Water in a Dry Environment
One third of the world's land surface is classified as arid or semi-arid and these regions are currently and potentially experiencing the highest water stress, from both water supply and development perspectives. It is therefore essential that appropriate investigation methods and strategies recognize the principal characteristics of in situ hydrological processes. UNESCO has thus identified integrated water management in arid and semi-arid zones as a priority, and called for this volume on hydrological processes in these regions. Although attention is primarily devoted to understanding the various processes, there is a clearly illustrated relationship with water management issues.

Groundwater Recharge Estimation in Southern Africa
Groundwater recharge is a key factor in determining the sustainable management of water resources, particularly in arid and semi-arid areas of Africa. This publication contains a selection of papers covering a wide range of topics on groundwater recharge estimation, written from a Southern African perspective and mostly by Southern African experts. It makes a valuable contribution to the advancement of groundwater science in Africa as a whole and to Southern Africa in particular.

World Water Resources at the Beginning of the 21st Century
This volume, released by the Cambridge University Press and edited by I.A. Shiklomanov and J. Rodda, provides a modern assessment of the state of the world's water resources. A uniform methodological approach for each continent is built upon to analyse the dynamics of water resources, water use and water availability for the Earth as a whole, and for all natural-economic regions and selected countries, as well as river water inflow to the World Ocean.

New IHP Brochure
On the occasion of the 3rd World Water Forum, a new brochure was prepared in cooperation with the Japanese National Committee for the IHP. The 12-page brochure provides information on the Programme, its working mechanisms and instruments and summarizes those activities and priorities that provide the most significant contributions to sustainable development.
