 Water talks

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

Water plays a pivotal role for sustainable development, including poverty reduction. UNDP focuses on supporting activities at the country level that aim to increase access to safe water and sanitation by 2015 and to halt the unsustainable exploitation of water resources.

In the past decade, UNDP has maintained a marked presence in water issues in 90 countries through its water programmes. As one of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) implementing agencies, it works to sustainably manage international water resources, including lakes and river basins. UNDP's GEF-funded Small Grants Programme has already provided grants for over 3,900 community-level projects.

UNDP and partners have established the Water and Sanitation Programme; Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council and Global Water Partnership, as well as capacity building for integrated management of water resources and service delivery.

Areas of expertise:UNDP works in 166 countries, helping to find solutions to unsustainable water management practices including water supply and sanitation.

Action on the Ground
 Engineering Wetlands in Egypt
Sediments and pollutants from municipal, industrial and agricultural sources in Egypt are worsening the water quality of the Nile, threatening the health and livelihood of millions of people as well as the Mediterranean Sea ecosystem. The Lake Manzala engineered wetlands project uses an affordable, relatively simple and efficient technology that traps the sediments and pollutants in a two-acre area.
A Village in Malawi Invests in Freshwater
To support a broader goal of strengthening local governance, the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and UNDP worked with the Government ofMalawi to develop pilot projects for participatory planning and financing of district-level capital investment.
 Sharing the Nile's Waters
How to allocate the water resources of rivers that run through several countries is a highly complex and politically sensitive issue involving questions of national sovereignty. For the countries that share the Nile River basin, a UNDP-supported project aims to define an acceptable framework for cooperation that will pave the way for equitable and legitimate use of the Nile.
