Engineering Wetlands in Egypt

Sediments and pollutants from municipal, industrial and agricultural sources in Egypt are worsening the water quality of the Nile, threatening the health and livelihood of millions of people as well as the Mediterranean Sea ecosystem. The Lake Manzala engineered wetlands project uses an affordable, relatively simple and efficient technology that traps the sediments and pollutants in a two-acre area. The $4.5-million project is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
