 Water talks

Water is a renewable but finite resource. The hydrological cycle - the succession of stages through which water passes from the atmosphere to the Earth and returns to the atmosphere - ensures there is the same amount of water now as existed when the Earth was formed. However, with population growth and ever-increasing demand for the same amount of water, pressures are mounting. Also, if we continue to degrade our environment, abusing and polluting its resources, we shall cause irremediable damage to our own health and that of the planet on which all life depends. We must change our ways. Individuals, institutions, governments - each has a role to play. The future is at stake, and we must act now.

First steps

Contact the IYFW focal point in your country to see what they are planning and how you can get involved. Each country has nominated an official focal point, and many other groups organizing events (including youth focal points!). Click on the map on the right side of your screen to access your country focal point.

Go to your local library, bookstore, look in the newspapers, talk to people to become more familiar about water, what the issues are, and how this affects your life and the world in which we live.

If you have access to email, sign up to the wateryear2003 listserve for updates and information about events happening around the world.

Soon you will be able to calculate your water footprint to see how much water you are using in your daily life. Is it a lot? Is it really necessary? What could you do to reduce the amount? Could this water be recycled?
