 UNESCO organizes workshop: Adapting to the impacts of global changes on river basins and aquifer systems
Global changes brought on by population growth, climate change, urbanization, expansion of infrastructure, migration, land conversion and pollution is altering the Earth and the way it functions. Although these changes are global, no institution or country can face the challenges they pose alone. UNESCO-IHP, as the only intergovernmental programme on water sciences with a focus on freshwater in the UN system, can foster the cooperation needed to bring all players together, whether they are Member States, research institutions, universities, UN agencies, NGOs, or national or international associations.

20 March - World Water Day 2008: Sanitation
The UN General Assembly declared the year 2008 the International Year of Sanitation. Consequently, World Water Day 2008, which will be celebrated this year on Thursday 20 March, will highlight issues on sanitation in accordance with the Year. People around the world are encouraged to celebrate the day to draw attention to the world’s sanitation challenge.

First announcement and call for papers: IV International Symposium on Transboundary Waters Management, Thessaloniki, Greece
Transboundary water resources are increasing in importance as sources of freshwater worldwide. As much as 80% of water resources in the Mediterranean region are shared between two or more countries, and in N. Africa and the Middle East, transboundary groundwaters are the most important source of freshwater.

United Nations Secretary-General pledges action on water resources at World Economic Forum
On Thursday, January 24th, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, stated that unless scarcities in water resources are addressed in the near future, the amount of conflicts in the world could rise. As a result, the United Nations will take action to confront water shortages through reaching anti-poverty targets set out in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

 Draft Strategy Plan for IHP-VII approved
On 12 December 2007, the Draft Strategy Plan for the 7th Phase of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) entitled “Water Dependencies: Systems under Stress and Societal Responses” was approved.
Each Phase of the IHP has a series of themes that reflect the needs of the Member States of UNESCO. Under each of these themes are focal areas that are more precise in carrying out projects laid out under the 7th Phase.
